FBI Director Andrew McCabe told lawmakers Wednesday that an FBI agent who allegedly had a hand in the Boston bombing plans was “lone-wolf” in a separate meeting with investigators.
McCabe told the House Intelligence Committee that an agent from the New England field office was on the call with him and another FBI agent when they were “pondering on the possible use of chemical agents.”
McCabe said he did not know who had been on the phone.
“He said, ‘I’m on a call with another FBI office.
This guy has said he has a little bomb,'” McCabe told reporters.
“And I said, no, he’s not.
And I said: ‘Well, that doesn’t sound good.
Let me know when it’s done.'”
McCabe said the agent “then said he would be willing to be a co-conspirator.”
McCabe was speaking on the Senate floor at the time of the bombing, which killed three people and injured more than 260 others.
McCabe also said he had not been contacted by any FBI officials regarding the FBI’s investigation into the Boston bombings.
McCabe said FBI Director James Comey has been briefed on the Boston Bombings, which he said has been “thorough and transparent.”
McCabe also reiterated that he is not looking into any specific allegations of collusion with Russia.
McCabe previously said the FBI was investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
He said the bureau had also launched an inquiry into possible coordination between Russian and members of the Trump campaign.
McCabe was joined by Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., and Rep. Adam Schiff, D, D.C., in a press conference Wednesday morning.
“Director Comey has told me that he has no information that would suggest that there was any collusion between Russia and the Trump administration,” McCabe said.
McCabe added that the FBI has “a full investigation” into the incident and that he believes there is no evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of any Trump associates.
“That’s why I’m not looking at it,” McCabe told House lawmakers.
“I have no evidence whatsoever.
I know the FBI is investigating it.
But that’s not what I’m looking at.”
